Privacy

What this app keeps, where it keeps it, and what it never keeps at all.

The short version

Lamp & Light has no advertising, no analytics and no trackers. Nothing you do in it is measured, profiled or sold, and nothing is shared with anybody for marketing. There is no third-party SDK in the app collecting anything.

You can read the plan, take notes, highlight verses, write prayers and keep a streak without ever giving us your name. An account is optional and unlocks nothing — it exists only so a second device can have your notes too.

What stays on your phone

Signed out, everything below lives on your device and is sent nowhere:

Your notes, highlights and the verses they are filed against
Your prayers and the times you have set for them
Which days you have marked read, and your streak
Your settings — translation, text size, theme, reading reminder, playback speed

Deleting the app deletes all of it.

What an account keeps

If you sign in, the same information is copied to our server so another device can pick it up. That copy holds:

Your email address, and a name if you gave one
Your notes and the reference each is about — a note stores your own words and a Bible reference, never the text of the verse
Your highlights, as a colour against a reference
Your prayers, including what you wrote under each of the four movements
Which days you have marked read, and your settings

A prayer is the one place scripture is stored, because a prayer you cannot pray without a signal is not one. It keeps the verses it is about, with the copyright notice that has to travel with them.

Signing in

There is no password. You enter your email address and we send a six-digit code; entering it signs you in. We store only a hash of that code, it expires after fifteen minutes, and five wrong guesses void it. We do not use Google, Apple, Facebook or any other sign-in provider, so none of them is told that you use this app.

Questions you send

The Ask tab sends your question to the church, by email, so it can be answered on the podcast. The question is kept on our server and forwarded to one church address. If you are signed in, your email address goes with it so a reply can reach you; signed out, it is anonymous. Nothing leaves your phone until you press Send.

An accountability partner

If — and only if — you choose to name one, you give us a person's name and mobile number, and we text them once a week about how your reading is going. That message is sent through Clearstream, the church's texting service, which handles it under its own privacy terms.

We text that person once to ask, and send nothing further until they reply yes. Every message carries a link that stops it in one tap. The weekly note says only how many days you read and roughly where you are in the plan — it never contains a verse, a note, a highlight or a prayer.

Scripture

The English Standard Version is licensed from Crossway and fetched from their API as you read. Requests are made by our server, not your phone, and are cached by passage rather than by reader — so what reaches Crossway is which passage was asked for, not who asked. The King James Version is public domain and comes with the app.

Opening a passage elsewhere

You can open the day's reading in another Bible app or website. Doing so hands that service a Bible reference and nothing else — no notes, no account, no identity — and from that point their privacy policy applies, not ours.

Notifications and the calendar

Prayer reminders are scheduled by your phone, on your phone. Nothing about them is sent anywhere, and no push notification service is involved. If you export prayers to your calendar, the file is written on your device and contains your own words but never a verse.

How long anything is kept

Your account's copy is kept until you delete it. Sign-in codes expire in fifteen minutes. Server logs record ordinary web request information for a short period and are used only to keep the service running.

Deleting everything

In the app, open Settings → Delete account. This removes your account, your synced notes, highlights, prayers, streak and settings, any questions you sent that have not yet been forwarded, and your accountability partner's details. It happens immediately and is not reversible. Your own device keeps its copy until you delete the app.

If you cannot reach the app, write to the address below and ask us to delete your account, and we will.

Children

Lamp & Light is a Bible reading plan for a general audience. It is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect anything from them.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that affects what we collect, the app will say so rather than quietly updating this page.
